Moving pricing is built from a handful of variables, and understanding it makes it much easier to review proposals fairly.
Distance sets the pricing model. Local moves are usually billed hourly with a crew size and a truck. Long-distance moves are typically priced on the weight of your shipment and the miles traveled, which is why estimates for the same household can look completely different in structure.
Volume is the next factor — how much you’re actually moving. A one-bedroom apartment and a four-bedroom house are different jobs, and an accurate inventory up front prevents surprises on moving day.
Access matters more than people expect. Stairs, long carries from the door to the truck, elevator reservations, and narrow streets all add crew time.
Timing drives price too. Summer weekends and the end of the month are peak windows across the industry. A midweek date in the off-season is often noticeably cheaper.
Finally, add-on services: packing, materials, disassembly and reassembly, specialty items like a piano or a gun safe, and storage between dates. Ask each mover what’s included in the number they gave you and what would be billed separately.
